| Tonight the Riverview Ice Sharks took on the Durant Cougars, and
this was the first game that I was able to attend. Unfortunately for
me, this wasn't the best game to watch. Things started out strong
for the Ice Sharks, even after they took the first penalty of the
game. Thankfully they killed of the Cougars power play, and just a
little over halfway through the first period they grabbed the lead
on a wrist shot from between the circles. Durant tied things up two
minutes later, as the Cougars player managed to make his way around
Drew before making a nice move to slip the puck in behind the Ice
Sharks goalie. Riverview fought back from giving up this
disappointing goal, and netted a nice goal of their own with just
over a minute remaining in the period thanks to a 3-on-1 breakaway
that resulted in a short tap-in goal. Riverview was able to hold on
to take the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Things didn't go so smoothly in the second period for Riverview,
as they would take three penalties in the middle frame, and would go
on to give up four goals. It took Durant only 33 seconds to tie the
game up at 2-2 on a nice wrist shot that cleared the shoulder of the
Ice Sharks goaltender. Durant would tack on two more goals just two
minutes apart, with the first coming from a nice pass with a little
over eight minutes remaining and the second on a similar pass to the
back side of the crease. Durant would add their fourth goal of the
period with just four minutes remaining on a 2-on-2 shorthanded
goal. The Ice Sharks would find themselves down by a 5-2 score
			heading into the final intermission.
Barely a minute into the third, the Cougars would widen their
lead even further with another pass to the back side of the net that
they were able to tap in for a 6-2 lead. Despite the deficit, the
Riverview team wasn't going to give up. They would score a
power-play goal on a rebound shot with a little over eight minutes
remaining. They would narrow the gap further a little over two
minutes later, with a pass through the crease that was tapped in to
make it a 6-4 game. The bad news is that was the end of the Ice
Sharks attack, as the Cougars would dominate play for the remainder
of the contest. 90 seconds after the Riverview goal the Cougars
would answer with a goal of their own to retake a 3 goal lead.
Riverview would go on to take three penalties in the final 3:35,
which gave the cougars an "easy" 5-on-3 goal. Thankfully that was
the final goal of the game, as the Cougars would go on to seal the
8-4 victory over the Ice Sharks.
From a personal perspective, Drew didn't have the best game
tonight. He got two shifts in the first period, and thanks to a
reach instead of positioning himself correctly his line gave up a
goal on his final shift of the period. He got two more shifts in the
second period, and once again was on the ice for a goal against
(though this was wasn't his fault). He didn't step on the ice in the
third at all, thanks in large part to the amount of special teams
play in the period - some power play time but mostly penalty kill.
Here's hoping for better luck over the rest of the season! |
