February 3rd, 2015
This looked to be the Storm's night as they were able to
grab an early one goal lead, even though they had to settle for heading to the
second period with the game tied at a goal apiece. Drew got the scoring started
with a goal scored while he was on his but, as the scrum in front of the net
resulted in several players going down to the ice. Drew kept poking at the puck,
eventually knocking past the goalie and into the back of the net. He was pretty
pumped to give his team the lead, and was all smiles for a long time after the
goal. Drew struck for second goal in the second period, which gave his team
another one goal lead at 2-1. Unfortunately there was a brief time in the second
period where the defensive effort seemed to disappear from all five players on
the ice for the Storm, as they allowed the Blizzard to go from trailing 2-1 to
being ahead 5-2 heading in to the third period, in an onslaught of goals that
seemed to happen in the blink of an eye. Just when it appeared that the Storm
team was done, they found the energy deep inside themselves to battle back,
chipping away at the Blizzard lead slowly but surely. First they knocked the
lead down to 2 goals, then eventually 1 before pulling the goalie for the extra
attacker. Despite some quality chances, the Storm players just weren't able to
net the potential game tying goal, falling by a final score of 5-4 in a tough
game in which the refereeing did no favors for anyone but the visiting team. I
can't use that as an excuse, but it is tough to overcome calls that are
nit-picky against one team and extremely loose for the other... One more game to
go, and one more chance for the Storm to earn their long sought after goal of a
victory!

Drew did take a checking penalty today, despite the fact that
worse hits weren't called the other way during the course of the
game. That kind of refereeing makes it tough for the kids to figure
out what they can and can't do.
