November 9th, 2013
Today's game started out about as well as could be for the
Lapeer Storm. They were able to hang tough with the Port Huron Flags team in the
first period, which ended in a 0-0 tie. The second period was close, but the
Flags managed to slip two shots past our backup goaltender to secure a 2-0 lead,
despite some good looks for the Storm team. By the time the third period rolled
around, the players for the Storm were getting visibly tired, as they were
severely shorthanded today. They wound up giving up 6 goals on the day while
scoring none themselves, but there was certainly no reason for the kids to be
down about the way that they played today.
Drew may have played his best game yet today... I don't
recall him skating this hard in any of the prior games that I have attended this
season. Not only did he hustle up and down the ice (with and without the puck in
his possession), but he also used his size to his advantage today - so much so
that a grandparent from the other team kept yelling "watch number 29!" from the
stands. I found this to be quite amusing, because nothing that Drew was doing
was illegal in any way. He was just finally using his size to get and keep
position on the ice from smaller kids. Instead of trying to skate around kids,
he was using his size to move them aside. The only downfall to the game was when
he collided with an opposing player while chasing after the puck, leading to an
awkward fall that resulted in him hitting his head on the ice. As expected in
this litigious day and age, the hit to the head meant an end to his day.
Fortunately for Drew, there was only slightly more than 2 minutes remaining when
he was injured, so he didn't miss much ice time because of his fall. We know
that nothing severe happened to him because there was no complaint of a headache
or other side effects of a concussion (Update: He got the doctor's clearance to
return to the ice on Monday, meaning he is good to go for practice).
